What is Skyrim?
Skyrim is the fifth entry in The Elder Scrolls video game series developed by Bethesda. Skyrim is an action role-playing game with a focus on character customization, combat, and exploration. The Elder Scrolls series has been around since 1994 with the series shifting from humble MS-DOS aesthetics to the immersive fantasy RPG we recognize the series as today.
Which Platform and Who Developed it?
Initially released in 2011, Skyrim debuted on Windows, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. It has since gone on to see releases on modern consoles such as the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and even the Nintendo Switch. The Switch release, in particular, allows the player to take their adventures on the go for even more enjoyment.
Main Features of Skyrim
Skyrim offers a plethora of mechanics for players to sink their time into. One of the main draws to Skyrim is that different skills level up the more you use them, which rewards players for following through on their preferred playstyle. There are skill trees to give you new abilities such as upgraded magic along with alchemy. You can upgrade your blacksmith skills to craft better armor and weapons. If you want to focus on persuasion and the act of thievery, there are skills for that as well.
What do Players Think About Skyrim?
Many different parts of Skyrim are both appealing and make you want to dragon shout to the heavens in a fit of rage. Let’s take a look at some of them.
- Pro – Embracing Your Playstyle: Skyrim goes the extra mile to make sure that players are rewarded for their every action. This holds true both for the skill point system along with conversing with NPCs and trading as well.
- Pro – The Exploration is Top Notch: If you’ve played Skyrim, one of the best parts is merely letting go and enjoying the immersiveness of the world. The day and night cycle has NPCs and monsters operating at different times, which can help keep things dynamic.
- Con – The Main Story Is The Least Engaging Part – The overarching narrative to the game, while rich in lore, is somewhat weak in the engagement aspect. Players are tasked with mundane fetch quests along with dungeons that feel underwhelming compared to some of the optional caves. If anything makes up for it, it’s the fact that the main antagonist Parthanaxx, a massive dragon, is voiced by Charles Martinet, aka Nintendo’s Super Mario.
- Con – The Game Is a Programming Nightmare: It’s no surprise that a game as ambitious as Skyrim suffers from bugs, but in this case, they can be absolutely game-breaking. Some bugs freeze the game from swimming in the water, while others may lag the game depending on how large the file is. Thankfully, many of the glitches lead to comedic brilliance, which helps even it out.
